How is PR and Marketing related?

Public Relations: The professional maintenance of a favourable public image by a company, other organisation, or famous person

Marketing: The action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising

The main difference? Marketing is focused on promoting and selling a specific product, whereas PR is focused on maintaining a positive reputation for a company as a whole.

The CIPR’s definition of PR is “Public Relations is about reputation—the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.”

In reality, PR is a tactic within the Marketing Mix. The marketing mix refers to the set of actions, or tactics, that a company uses to promote its brand or product in the market. The 4Ps make up a typical marketing mix – Price, Product, Promotion and Place. PR sits under Promotion.

PR teams often measure success differently to marketing teams, yet we believe these two disciplines can work hand-in-hand to build your brand and drive leads or sales. And that’s why we exist as a single entity offering Marketing & PR.

The ability to write a compelling story and create an interesting angle is what we believe PR is about. But that sounds a lot like content creation to the typical Inbound Marketeer.

We started in 2013 to merge PR and Inbound Marketing and build an consultancy for the way people consume messages today.
